4 out of 5 stars Zombieland   February 20, 2010

"STAY ALIVE" So are the immortal words of Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) as he tells us how to survive the zombie apocalypse. In college when the zombies took over America, Columbus is now trying to make it back home to Ohio to see if his family is still alive when he runs into Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), a man who excels at killing zombies and just wants a twinkie. In Tallahassee's search for a twinkie, they run across Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin). With the new girls running the show, they all decide to head west to Pacific Playland, a place supposedly free of zombies.

When Shaun of the Dead came out in 2004, written by the guys behind Spaced (if you haven't seen that show, I highly recommend you check it out), it was a breath of fresh air. Recent spoof movies didn't now how to be cutting edge and funny at the same time, but Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg knew how to make an homage correctly. It was only a matter of time before Shaun of the Dead brought forth copy cats. If only all copy cats could be this good!

Zombieland is one of those rare instances where a movie comes out being nearly as good as the movie that inspired it. Like Shaun of the Dead, it can't really be said that Zombieland is truly a spoof as much as it is a comedy that involves zombies. This time they're not the slow moving zombies that inspired Shaun, but they're the fast moving zombies that we've seen more of in the remake of Dawn of the Dead and 28 Days Later. This is important because where Shaun of the Dead was a little more old school, Zombieland tries to give it's story more current flourishes like those seen in more recent indie movies. It gives the movie a nice original narrative feel, but at times can be slightly distracting.

The acting in this movie is superb. Despite the indie flavors of the movie, this film really helps break indie darlings Jesse Eisenberg and Abigail Breslin into the mainstream. Woody Harrelson, though, steals every scene of the movie he's in (with the exception of a brilliant cameo late in the second act of the movie that I'd rather not give away at this moment). Harrelson gives the movie a little bit of an old school hero flavor with his quiet hero, but also has something in his past that gives him a rounded out character to play.

While the movie is great, in the third act of the movie some of the characters make really bad decisions that propel the movie forward. Of course, this brings out the "damsel in distress" portion of the movie that seems to be seen in a lot of movie. It's unfortunate too, in a movie that does so well at being somewhat original in it's premise to nearly fall apart by lazy writing in it's final act.

All in all though, I'd highly recommend this movie. It's still surprisingly refreshing to see a movie that is genuinely funny while still paying great homage to it's predecessors. If you like zombie movies, dark humor, or Shaun of the Dead, you'll probably like this movie. Trust me, give it a shot!

Let's set our Way-Back Machines to 1968. A young director named George Romero has just released a new, low-budget zombie flick called Night of the Living Dead. Although I never did get into that one, I loved the 1978 sequel Dawn of the Dead which I renamed Zombie Mall. Since then, I've seen several zombie flicks, and while very few have risen to the level of Dawn of the Dead, there are stand-outs including Resident Evil, Shaun of the Dead, and South Park's "Pinkeye" episode. ZOMBIELAND is not on that short list.

To be fair, ZOMBIELAND is worth seeing if you don't mind a good amount of unspecified gore. It's a high-budget take on a low-budget flick. The acting is serviceable with Woody Harrelson being the best of the bunch. But there's really nothing new here. There are a couple of laughs, including a cameo by Bill Murray and a quest to find Twinkies, but this is mostly ground that has been covered, and much of it was covered in 1978.

Even so, ZOMBIELAND is the perfect movie for beer and pizza night. No need to pause it during bathroom breaks.

"Zombieland" is a good Ol' popcorn muchin', summertime style zombie killin', action flick, that is actually smartly written and deftly directed. The best comparison I can make is that it's a cinematic cross breeding of the apocalyptic, zombie disease destroyed, civilization of "28 Days Later" with the zombie belly laughs of "Shaun of the Dead".

In the film, human civilization has apparently munched on one too many E.coli filled cheeseburgers, which has made "the leap from mad-cow to mad-human to mad-zombie." The film is narrated by Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) a brainy, nebbish-like wimp, who is forever going over his list of rules (which are inventively displayed on screen), that have so far kept him alive in what he has dubbed "Zombieland". He is joined by Tallahasse (Woody Harrelson) a violent, psychotic redneck, who's two joys in life are killing zombies and finding the last remnents of Hostess Twinkies, left in the USA. These two characters are polar opposites, but their humorously testy, at odds, relationship seems to work. Eventually they meet up with two young, con-artist sisters, Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin), who are on their way to a supposably "zombie-free", L.A. amusment park for a little fun. Together, these four eclectic characters embark on a violent, but very funny, zombie killing road trip, cross-country to the West Coast.

"Zombieland" is hardly a horror film. I really wouldn't call it scary at all. Instead it is more of a comedy, set up with some very well-directed, violent, action sequences. But what really sets this movie apart from other zombie films is the literate, well written script (by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick) that actually seems to care about its characters and give them a little dimension all while offering up some very funny, pointed, dialogue that satirizes everything from American obesity to our obsession with movies and Hollywood celebrity. Plus, how many zombie movies have you seen that references both Gandhi and Hannah Montana?

The young cast is very good, but the stand out performance goes to Woody Harrelson. He's really amazing playing a psychotic redneck with heart (and a whole lot of weapons). Finally, there is a surprise, extended celebrity cameo, that will have you rolling on the floor with laughter. (O.K., one hint...he's a comedy legend).

"Zombieland" is an excellent, action packed movie with lots of blood, bodies and laughs. Give it a try!

5 out of 5 stars Family values in a not-safe-for-kids zombie flick   February 19, 2010

Yes, I know it's campy and far from a family-safe movie... but it's one of the most entertaining Zombie flicks out there. It isn't meant to be dark and scary like most of them, but like Sean of the Dead is intended to make you laugh out loud and to think about loyalty, friendship during the inevitable apocalyptic decay of society.

5 out of 5 stars Who is the better Zombie killer tag-team? Shaun and Ed or Tallahassee and Columbus?   February 19, 2010

Zombieland is a bloody comedy full of gore, guts and guffaws!
I know it's been said before but Zombieland is the new Shaun of the Dead.
The zombie slaying, comedy and awkward romance are similar in both films.

Woody Harrelson's performance is nothing short of amazing! Tallahassee (Harrelson) is a zombie killing machine with an unholy obsession with finding a twinky. No zombie will stand in the way of this man and his twinky! Jesse Eisenberg's acting is Michael Cera-like. Columbus (Eisenberg) like Tallahassee has his own obsessions: emergency bathroom visits and survival rules!
The performances of all the actors (including a cameo from Bill Murray himself) are well done.
There are a few predictable plot moments but they are not enough to distract from the humor of the film.

If you're a fan of the comedy/horror genre then you have to watch this movie!
