Boring! July 18, 2010 du_nomad (Salinas, CA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I think my biggest gripe with this film was the fact that, based on the title, I fully expected it to primarily follow the exploits of the Basterds. However, quite honestly they could have been left completely out of the film with very little effort--they were nothing more than background characters popping in every now and again. Pitt's character had so much potential to be interesting, but we never learn hardly anything about him and he quickly becomes rather generic. Similarly, the plot itself had quite a bit of potential to be intriguing and enthralling, but instead became labored and boring. I'm glad I waited for the DVD rental, rather than wasting money on the big screen.
Good fun July 5, 2010 MISTER SJEM (CALIF BAY AREA United States) Good fun and some really nice dialogue scenes. Brad Pitt is memorable in actions and mannerisms and there's enough gore and shock value typical of a Tarantino film. That said, while I liked it I didn't really like it or love it. MY GRADE: B
Controlled and literate schizophrenia July 5, 2010 ninjasuperstar (Iowa) Inglourious Basterds accomplishes what a seemingly unrelated film, Observe and Report, fails to do--sprinkle a mostly serious and violent movie with slapstick comedy. This is mostly due to the character of Lt. Aldo Raine, otherwise known as Brad Pitt's best impersonation of Foghorn Leghorn. Raine leads a small group of soldiers in ambushes of Nazi soldiers in France. They are brutal, scalping the men the kill and branding those they release.
The film also includes a menacing and Academy-Award-winning performance by Christoph Waltz. He plays Col. Hans Landa, a "Jew-hunting" detective and all-around bad guy. He is the perfect Nazi cartoon who is charged with routing the remaining Jews in France and locating Raine and his men.
These are but two of the plots that writer/director Quentin Tarantino puts into motion, swirling them together until they culminate in a bloody conclusion. The comedic moments that Tarantino inserts into his script may come off as cutesy and inappropriate, but the long-winded and clever dialogue between enemies and the scenes of brutal violence need to be tempered with a dumb laugh every now and then.
Inglourious Basterds is silly, tense, gruesome, touching, and a variety of other seemingly disparate tones. Tarantino gets away with more schizophrenia in this film than any I've ever seen. On paper, it sounds like a mess, but believe me, it is not. Robert Richardson's beautiful cinematography (nominated for an Academy Award) and the sound editing (also nominated for an Academy Award) should be given as much credit as the writing and directing in the creation of this unique film. This is definitely an adult film, and I recommend it.
How bad can it get??? July 4, 2010 Ernest D. Cossiboom (Louisville, KY) 9 out of 17 found this review helpful
I've never seen a Tarantino movie that I liked, and this is no exception. A friend of mine who likes military movies recommended it, and later admitted that he had fallen alseep during the early part of the film and never saw the cheesy, ridiculous, disappointing way that the whole thing ends up. I guess some viewers think they are somehow superior and "artsy" to find admirable qualities in this work, but, like the story of the emperor's clothes, it's time for someone to stand up and say that this, in naked reality, is nothing but pure crap.
and.... July 1, 2010 R. James (Princeville, HI, USA) I Enjoyed Blu Ray of this movie. Usual Tarantino use of quirky narrative juxtapositions, excellent performances from actors (Gestapo officer here is excellent.) anachronistic music, dialog and cultural assumptions and over the top violence. The problem is the protagonists are directly involved with historical figures and what happens to them in the film did not happen. There is a reel missing at the end of the movie in my view. As my own inferior suggestion by way solely of example, If one of the basterds had not been killed in the cellar bar then one could cut from the end of the movie to him being revived by Landa or the Basterds, the realization all was still to play for but then we would have to imagine why and how it did not happen.
