Amazon.com For Halo Legends, various anime directors made eight short films that explore the universe of the popular video game franchise, just as the shorts in Animatrix expanded on the Matrix features. Although Halo ranks among the top first-person shooter games, the AI narrator of Hideki Futamura's two-part introductory episode complains about humanity's violent tendencies: "Like a virus, war is always with you." "The Duel," which pits two Covenant warriors in a samurai-like battle over honor, has a watercolor look that recalls Gankutsuou: Count of Monte Cristo. Unfortunately, the effect is applied too evenly, and the characters get lost in the backgrounds. Daisuke Nishio's "Odd Man Out" injects a welcome note of comedy, as warrior Spartan 337 copes with three difficult children and their pet tyrannosaur. Other Spartans in single fighters attack the flagship of the Covenant fleet in "The Package," by Shinji Aramaki. The elaborately choreographed space battle is obviously modeled on the attack on the Death Star in Star Wars, but the sequence packs more visual punch than the other films in the anthology. Dr. Catherine Halsey ends this segment with the line, "Something tells me this is just the beginning," so additional films may be in the works. Halo Legends was clearly intended to expand the audience for the already-popular franchise, but the shorts aren't strong enough as films to win many viewers who aren't currently members of the "Halo Nation." The disc comes loaded with extras, including a standard making-of mini-documentary about each segment. Although the cover bears the warning "Parents strongly cautioned: Violent Content Throughout," the action in Halo Legends is surprisingly tame. (Rated PG-13: violence, violence against women) --Charles Solomon

Better than I thought it would be !! August 22, 2010 KCB (Santa Clara, CA United States) OK, I've never played the game, or read any of the books (but I do have the 1st book here).
I really liked these stories. I am also a fan of the Animatrix though too.
I thought they did a nice job in terms of alluding to how big the war is, but also including the human element. I really liked the Duel in particular, because it was told from the viewpoint of the Covenant's side. The stylized animation for that one adds to the story.
Also: Under Special Features, there is the Story of Halo So Far. This is a key featurette. I have mixed feelings whether I would recommend watching it 1st or after you've watched all the episodes. Has a lot of key info in there that might help explain what's going on in the individual episodes as you watch them, but at the same time, maybe I got more out of this because I *didn't* understand as much and had to put things together myself as I watched the episodes.
Anyway, I really enjoyed this !! Hopefully they do another DVD/BD sometime, and I really need to read that 1st book now ... :-)
Halo the anime August 2, 2010 Pacheco The movie starts out slow, lot of dialogue, you have to be a halo fan to watch the movie, and if not a lot is explained in the begining, the only thing I didnt like is how the spartans get handled, but thats how war is many casualties.
Halo is the BEST First-person shooter game Ever. June 25, 2010 I Love Yahweh Yeshua Christ! (Brooklyn, New York) I do understand why some people Hate It or Didn't Like It which is because there is alot of Playstation 3 Fans and Fans of the previous versions of Playstation out there. Halo Legends is base on those video games for the X-Box and X-Box 360 and other sources in which I love the Halo Video Games for it is the BEST First-person shooter Ever for at least the way the Covenant and the Flood fight back against you when you play it on Legendary. There is 8 stories but I like the last four stories better which are: (1)Odd One Out which is a silly funny with a Dragon Ball flavor, (2)Prototype, (3)The Babysitter and (4)The Package in which I love this story the most for if you are a Fan of the Halo Game Series you will know why. In Halo Legends you get various art forms, Halo history, Sci Fi Star Trek plus Star Wars like battles, violence, love and more. The Flood are mention here and I have to say in the Halo Video Games they scare me more than Michael Jackson's Thriller video.
Highs and lows June 9, 2010 Matthew S. Carpenter (Brookings, OR USA) I was going to make this a decent review but Amazon unfortunately screwed up the original and I don't feel like retyping it all.
Overall this is an excellent DVD set graphically, visually, acousticly, and story wise but has a tendency to be a bit of a downer. Not surprising considering the nature of the Halo universe and how humans get the short end of the stick. That said some stories are also incredibly up lifting while at the same time being somewhat depressing.
And while Halo Legends is not exactly a thought provoking master piece I found myself contemplating the themes of each story, except one, quite deeply even several days after viewing them.
A word of warning "Odd One Out" attempts to be funny and crackish but in my opinion it is exceedingly stupid.
Got Me Intersted In The Halo Universe May 31, 2010 Rockstar Romeraux (Baker,Louisiana) Before watching this film, I wasn't a Halo fan at all, but I was a little curious. I finally decided to watch it today, and it was so good, I had to watch it twice! It's not actually a feature film, but seven different short episodes on one disc, all done by different animation studios, so no episode is the same, and all of them are excellent. There is alot of action, drama, suspence, and even comedy in one episode done by the talented artists of the Dragonball series. I caught on to the Halo story pretty quick thanks to Origins 1 and 2, so I was able to enjoy all the rest of the episodes. By the time it was all done, I was facinated by the Halo story, and I will buy the games in the near future. Overall Halo Legends gets a 5/5.
