Blu Ray DVDs / Discs - were created to read and write large amounts of information. While a standard DVD can only hold 4.7 GB of data, a Blu Ray Disc can hold up to 25 GB of high-def data on single layer discs and up to 50 GB with double layer discs. Blu-Ray discs play only in Blu-Ray Disc Players or Blu-Ray ROM drives.

Also, they have a special protective hard-coating for increased durability. Additional features like BD-Live extend the movie viewing experience beyond your living room.

Benefits of Blu Ray
There are many improvements to the Blu-Ray DVD format over standard definition DVDs. Blu-Ray delivers up to 6 times the video quality of standard definition and has the capacity for a number of high-definition audio encodings.
Blu-Ray also has some major audio benefits. With 7.1 audio and superior audio encodings, the sound you hear is measurably better. Having a nice Blu-Ray Disc Home Theater System doesn't hurt.

Bonus Features of Blu Ray
Compared to DVDs, Blu-Ray has the ability to extend additional features beyond simple navigational screens into dynamic interactivity - gaming consoles for example. Bonus content is extended even further through the internet with BD-Live.

Extra disc space means there's room for significantly more content and special features. When you buy a movie, you're usually not just getting the movie--you're also getting the extra features that come along with it, like director's commentary and making-of documentaries (depending on the disc).

With Blu Ray, there's the possibility for previously unheard-of special features. Games can now be integrated into your movie experience. Picture-in-Picture allows for additional media to play while the movie is running. This can be used for video commentary by directors, or for displaying messages from other viewers through BD-Live.

Newer titles will be BD-Live enabled. This extends Blu-Ray Disc features even further through exclusive and downloadable content. A typical feature of BD-Live might be a quiz game you play with other viewers, testing your knowledge on facts about the film. Another instance might allow for viewers to unlock additional content after viewing the film. You will need a Profile 2.0 Blu-Ray Disc Player and access to the internet for BD-Live.

The PlayStation 3 offers consumers a state-of-the-art, high-definition gaming experience in addition to being a Blu-Ray DVD and music player. Also, firmware updates help keep this player up-to-date with industry standards. For example the PS3 is now a Profile 2.0 specification Blu Ray Player, or BD-Live capable, through downloadable firmware. The PlayStation 3's removable hard disk drive (HDD) is available in more than one size (40 or 80 GB). All consoles include HDMI and component connectors, which means you can use your console with most high-definition displays as well as conventional or standard TVs. (Note that only some HDTVs only support 1080p signals via HDMI cables, but even if yours isn't one of them, you'll still get excellent results with 1080i output.)
